A slightly populated island.

The island counts 260,000 Inhabitants today. The last survey in 1999 counted 256,000 inhabitants mainly grouped in Ajaccio and Bastia (about 40% of the total population) : it’s the least populated of the large western Mediterranean islands.

Corsica is an island of expatriates, today more than 800,000 Corsicans live on the continent or abroad (two ex-presidents of Venezuela where of Corsican origin).

Corsican was a land of welcome for a long time. Beyond Italian immigration it received the following day of the Algerian war a great number of immigrants from the ex-French colony. Their setting up on the eastern plain was not done without clash and this was large the part of the birth of the Nationalism movement. Since 1975 Corsica received less foreigners but more French from the continent. Today about 22000 foreigners live on the island, being 8% of the population. The birth rate is weak about 2,900 annual births it follows largely beneath the national average.
The deserting of island village also present a problem.

The village population is at the same time sparse and elderly.
The 15 most highly populated communities of Corsica are as follows : Ajaccio, 53 000 and Bastia and its conglomeration 54 000.

More than 40% communities have less than 100 people.
